Auto-captions can be used for:

Generating a transcript, located in the captions tab.

Indexing your video, so that you can easily go directly to a specific timestamp using the transcript.
Note: When using the auto-captioning feature, the Clipchamp app must use Azure Cognitive Services to process your video's audio to generate your captions in the fastest way possible.
How to use auto-captions
Step 1. Add your video to the timeline
Drag and drop your video onto the timeline.
You can also record a video directly in the editor using our online webcam recorder. If you need more help, read how to record a webcam video help article.
Step 2. Add the auto-captions feature
Click on the captions tab on the property panel.
Next, click on the turn on the auto-captions button.
A caption language detection pop-up window will appear. Select the language that is used throughout your video. You can also check the box to filter any profanity and offensive language.
Note: There are many languages to choose from. Head over to our full list of languages for more information. Currently, we only support a single language for each video project. Once you select a language, auto-captions will attempt to interpret all spoken audio as the same language.
To create your auto-captions, click on the turn on auto-captions button.
You will automatically return to the editor, and your captions will begin to generate. You can track the progress of your auto-captions in the captions tab. The amount of time it takes to generate your captions will depend on your internet connection and the length of your video.
Once your auto-captions are ready, they will appear on the bottom of your video preview and also create a transcript on the right sidebar.
Step 3. Playback your video
Click on the play button to playback your video with auto-captions.
You can navigate your video by clicking on a specific word on the transcript. The seeker will automatically jump to the timestamp of the specific word.
Step 4. Save your video with auto-captions
To save your video, click on the export button and select a video resolution. We recommend saving in 1080p video resolution for the highest quality.
How to edit auto-captions
Editing the transcript
If a word is misspelled or incorrect in the transcript, click on the specific word on the transcript and rewrite the word(s). Only the owner of the video will have access to view and edit the video and transcript.
Editing the appearance of your captions
You can also edit the appearance of your captions. Click on the caption on the video preview to open the text tab on the property panel.
Here, you can edit the font and alignment of your captions. Click on the down arrow to view all of our font styles. You can also add your own brand kit font. Click on a font style to change your captions font.
To edit the alignment, click on the alignment options. You can move your caption starting point to the left, middle, or right side.
To change the color of your captions, click on the colors tab.
Select a different primary color and background color if desired.
Change the position and size of your captions using the transform tab. Click on the transform tab on the property panel to open editing options. Use the position menu, or resize your captions using the size slider.
You can also freely edit the size and position of your captions using the freehand tool.
How to download the SRT file from the auto-captions
SRT is a standard format for representing subtitles, also known as SubRip file format. SRT files give you the option to add subtitles to a video after it’s produced.
You can download your SRT file by clicking on the download captions button in the captions tab on the property panel.
The SRT file will automatically download to your device.
How to turn off auto-captions
To turn off auto-captions, simply click on the turn off auto-captions button in the captions tab on the property panel.
The captions will be removed from your video. You can still export your video without captions.
Frequently asked questions
Who has access to this data?
No one has access to the data. Microsoft Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) involves no human intervention, meaning no one will have access to the audio at any time. [Learn more].
Does Clipchamp store any caption data?
Yes. Caption data is stored with your Clipchamp video, which can only be accessed by yourself.
If I don't want Clipchamp to process this data, to begin with, can I prevent it?
Yes. If you don’t want Clipchamp to process any data, simply do not turn on the auto-captioning feature.
